A fellowship dinner entitled “A Greeting from China with Max and Elena” was organised by the Rotary Club of Carpi, Italy on Thursday August 28th, at the Sporting by Michele Restaurant in Carpi

During an interview, conducted by radio presenter “Mr. Alessandro Bassoli”, Max and Elena painted a picture of their life in a country whose culture is, in many respects, very different to that of their homeland. They also gave wonderful insights into the unique ways in which Rotary operates in China and contrasted this with how they used to work with Rotary in Italy

Tartan, Toasts, and Meals That Heal

The evening of January 17th featured Scottish poetry and traditional hospitality, creating a warm and engaging atmosphere. Guests dressed in tartan gathered at Shares Bar to commemorate the life and works of Robert Burns, while also supporting a meaningful charitable cause. This Burns Night event was jointly organized by the New Sunshine Charity Foundation in collaboration with community partners, including HSBC and the Rotary Club of Hangzhou. Beyond cultural celebration, the event aimed to connect community engagement with practical support for children receiving medical treatment in hospitals.

During the event, participants observed traditional customs while contributing to a shared humanitarian objective. Through collective efforts, the event raised over 6,000 RMB in donations. These funds support the core mission of the New Sunshine Charity Foundation, which recognizes the importance of nutritional support during medical treatment. Since 2017, the foundation’s program has focused on providing children affected by cancer and other serious illnesses, as well as their families, with safe, nutritious, and personalized meals throughout extended hospital stays.
活动期间，来宾在体验传统仪式的同时，也积极参与公益捐助。本次活动共筹集善款6,000余元人民币，用于支持新阳光慈善基金会的核心项目。基金会始终强调，在疾病治疗过程中，营养支持具有不可替代的重要作用。自2017年起，该项目持续为患有癌症及其他重大疾病的儿童及其家庭，在长期住院期间提供安全、营养且符合个体需求的餐食服务。
The success of Burns Night reflects an effective model of community-based service. It demonstrates how cultural activities can be integrated with charitable action to achieve measurable impact. While attendees enjoyed a traditional supper and, for some, a guided whisky tasting experience, the primary focus remained on service. Each contribution made during the event translated directly into assistance for children in need. For example, a donation of 20 RMB enables the provision of one complete, nutritious meal, illustrating how modest contributions can collectively produce meaningful outcomes.

Through both direct assistance and innovative fundraising activities such as this, the New Sunshine Charity Foundation continues to advance its mission of ensuring that families facing serious childhood illness are not left without support. The Rotary Club of Hangzhou is proud to have contributed to this effort, reflecting Rotary’s commitment to Service Above Self and to creating sustainable, positive change within the community.

The Rotary Club of Hangzhou (RCHZ) had the honour of attending a club meeting of the Rotary Club of London (RCL) on January 5th, 2026, at the Chesterfield Hotel in central London. RCL meets most Mondays between 12:30 and 2pm, or in the evening from 6:30pm

Eve, although a new member of RCL, is in fact a veteran Rotarian; having been the first female District Governor of Rotary in London in 2012/13, President of Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland in 2016/2017, having served as Vice-Chair, End Polio Now: Countdown to History Campaign Committee from 2016 to 2023, and was most recently Rotary International Director from 2023 to 2025. Eve brings a wealth of Rotary experience, and will be a valuable addition to the oldest club in the United Kingdom

The Special Training for Action in Rotary (S.T.A.R.) was developed by the Rotary Club of El Paso, Texas, USA, in 1976. Since then, it has become an invaluable program across Rotary clubs worldwide — a proven and engaging way to deepen members understanding of Rotary, strengthen club involvement, and prepare future leaders

Learning, Laughter, and Rotary Fellowship
The Rotary Club of Hangzhou recently took part in the S.T.A.R. program — Club President Alex, Secretary Cindy, members Elena, and Max, and our prospective members, Megan, Leo, Brandon and Nadia. We turned the learning into a lively, laughter-filled experience! The session combined education and fun, bringing together seasoned members and newcomers for an inspiring day of discovery, teamwork, and fellowship
Members engaged in interactive discussions, shared personal Rotary stories, and reflected on how service can make a real difference in the community. There were plenty of smiles and `ah` moments as everyone deepened their understanding of Rotary`s purpose and passion
And of course, no Rotary event is complete without friendship and laughter! Between activities, members enjoyed icebreakers, light-hearted games, and even a few friendly debates about the most memorable service project ever. The positive energy in the room was contagious — a true reflection of the Rotary motto, Service Above Self

The visit to Welshpool Rotary Club held special significance for President Alex, as it was through Welshpool Rotary that he was first introduced to Rotary ideals. As a teenager, he received support from the club to help finance a youth expedition—an experience that inspired him to later join Rotary in Hangzhou when he learned of the club’s existence

During the meeting in Welshpool, the Rotary Clubs of Hangzhou and Welshpool exchanged club flags as a symbol of friendship and cooperation. Although Shrewsbury Rotary was unable to provide a flag at the time, they kindly promised to send one to Hangzhou next year

President Alex and Secretary Cindy both gave presentations about Rotary’s growth and activities in China, encouraging stronger international links and collaboration between clubs. Welshpool President Bill Rowell and Vice President Phil Owen warmly welcomed the idea of closer ties and even suggested the possibility of twinning in the future—an idea all parties agreed to explore further

The Hangzhou members were also pleased to learn that Shrewsbury Rotary Club will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year, and expressed their hope to visit again to join in the celebrations

Rotary Connect for Cooking: A Celebration of Lebanese Cuisine and Fight to End Polio

On October 27, 2025, the Rotary Club of Hangzhou hosted a vibrant community event titled “Rotary Connect for Cooking” at Souq, a Lebanese restaurant known for its authentic flavors and warm hospitality
2025年10月27日，杭州扶轮社在以地道风味和热情好客著称的黎巴嫩餐厅 Souq 举办了一场充满活力的社区活动——“扶轮烹饪连结（Rotary Connect for Cooking）”
The gathering brought together Rotarians, community members, and friends in a spirit of service, cultural exchange, and global health advocacy

This event celebrated Lebanese heritage while shining a spotlight on Rotary International’s signature cause for October — the eradication of polio through the End Polio Now campaign
